What is a Softphone?
A Softphone is a PC-based application that enables a desktop, laptop or workstation computer to function as a telephone via Voice over IP technology. Equipped with a headset or a hand-held device, and using the numbers on the keyboard to dial, the computer with soft phone software can perform the full range of telephone features available through traditional systems, such as teleconferencing and call forwarding. Softphones typically make use of the computer's sound card for audio input and output.
Packet8 Softalk v1.5
Packet8’s Softalk version 1.5 PC-based softphone incorporates next generation video compression technology built around the H.264 video codec, an ITU (International Telecommunications Union) standard noted for delivering outstanding video quality at very low data rates. This feature significantly enhances the overall videoconferencing experience on Softalk to Softalk calls which can accommodate up to six participants simultaneously. To further enhance the user experience, Packet8 Softalk 1.5 features "zero- touch" configuration for audio and video devices, such as headsets or webcams, enabling automatic configuration each time Softalk is started and whenever devices are changed. Additionally, Softalk 1.5 includes an enhanced contacts manager with Microsoft® Outlook® support and importing/exporting capabilities.
After downloading Packet8 Softalk™ to a laptop or PC, subscribers can simply go online to make phone calls and enjoy the great benefits of Packet8 service.

Allows unlimited IP to IP ("in-network") voice and video calling between other "Softalkers" or to any Packet8 subscriber (including Packet8 VideoPhone users) free of charge. There is no activation or disconnect fee for this offering. This plan is ideal for current Packet8 subscribers or consumers interested in trying Packet8 Internet phone service.
Business Softalk
Softalk™ Office
Packet8 Softalk™ Office, a PC-based softphone for use with the Packet8 Virtual Office hosted PBX phone service for business, is ideal for road warriors and telecommuters. Softalk Office gives Packet8 Virtual Office subscribers access to a full-featured Virtual Office softphone extension directly from a personal computer without the need for a separate Virtual Office telephone. An easy-to-use graphic keypad functions as the main user interface, allowing for quick access to both basic and advanced Virtual Office calling features. Additionally, Softalk Office enhances the already robust PBX feature set of the Virtual Office service by enabling videoconferencing between as many as six participants simultaneously.
Softalk Office users have access to the same corporate-class PBX calling features offered with the Packet8 Virtual Office service. Key features include:
